For all the majesty nature around Catemaco, the tourist will find real paradises to practice different activities, from the most challenging heights to the most intrepid water activities.
If you want to go for a calm walk on foot or on horseback, try the side of Puerto Veracruz; for trained people, there is a 12 km distance between Puerto and Boca del Rio that can be traveled on foot or horseback.
The huge Los Tuxtlas Special Reserve possesses over 150 thousand ha where the most unexpected climates converge. Forrest, mangrove, jungle and savanna are found in different climates, with different flora and fauna species that make it an incredible ecologic space. Among the over 100 species, visitors will be able to see the jaguar and other animals in their natural habitat, some of them endangered species under protection.
El Salto de Eyipantla is a beautiful 40m wide and 50m high waterfall located in the outskirts of Catemaco, near Rio Grande de Catemaco. The species of animals found there make it a place of concern for ecotourism, since it is the habitat of the wild pig, deer, possum and tiger cat, besides a great variety of birds, such as the eagle, pheasant, wild pigeon and canorous.
In Cachalacas Beach, it is very common to see young people and adults riding quads at full speed, especially on weekends and holidays.
Antón Lizardo is located near Boca del Rio, to the north of Catemaco. It’s a beautiful, gentle sea swell beach that shares Reef Complex of Veracruz. Some of its reefs have been named Chopas, Cabezo, Santiaguillo, Anegada de Afuera, Anegadilla and En Medio. Professional divers can go dozens of meters downwards in order to contemplate some of the 17 stony coral reefs, home of different mollusk species, endless fish and crustaceans, besides a sunken ship.
Fishing and sailing take place in the sea in front of Veracruz Port and Antón Lizardo Beach. Traditionally in May, Sabado de Plata Fishing Tournament is held in Veracruz Port, where species such as shad, tuna fish, jurel, red snapper, corvina, barracuda, dogfish, sea bass, wahoo and shark live in. In Anton Lizardo, to the north of Catemaco, fish such as comber fish, red snapper and flounder can be caught; you can find all the services to rent boats and offer experienced guide in the beach.
If you just want to go sailing, renting a sailboat or a yacht to relax while you go for a ride by Veracruz coast, go to Veracruz Yacht Club in Playa Regatas, a place where you can contract services of a two floor yacht with a capacity for 100 people. The address is Blvd. Ávila Camacho and Sporting, in Faros Housing Development in Veracruz Port, Catemaco’s twin town.
Temazcal is a relaxing bath of pre-Hispanic origin, it pursuits the body’s well-being and a real therapy in all senses. Despite its ritual uses in old times, nowadays it is a place visited by tourist. Basically, the body is put in high temperatures, releasing sweat and toxins that contaminate the body. Some establishments in Catemaco, specialized in this type of baths, combine mud baths and stimulant massages, a delight for any visitor.
Nanciyaga is an ecological reserve located only 7 km from Catemaco and 166 km from Veracruz City. Along its 40 ha terrain, where a jungle and a lake show their beauty, travelers will be able to do several activities.
You can practice ecotourism in a refreshing walk, while you watch exotic vegetation and a place to watch crocodiles. In Cemeli and Temazcal, mud face packs and hot baths, respectively, will be extraordinary relaxing activities; to relax, there are also beach chairs in Asoleadero, Nipapaqui, which is a shower room in mineral water, and the mineral water spring itself. To practice kayaking there is Asoleadero, where kayakers depart to the lake. Finally, to go shopping and get a souvenir, there is a handcraft store with replicas of pre-Hispanic pieces.
